اکبر باقری در سال ۹۶ توسط نیروهای امنیتی در تهران بازداشت و به زندان اوین منتقل شد. وی در تابستان ۹۷ توسط شعبه پانزده دادگاه انقلاب تهران به ریاست قاضی صلواتی از بابت اتهامات تبلیغ علیه نظام و اجتماع و تبانی به ۹ سال حبس محکوم شد. این حکم نهایتا در دادگاه تجدیدنظر نیز عیناً تایید شد. این زندانی سیاسی پس از وقایع زندان اوین در مهر ماه سال ۱۴۰۱، به همراه شماری دیگر به زندان رجایی شهر کرج منتقل شد. او در نهایت در تاریخ ۱۸ اردیبهشت ۱۴۰۲، به دنبال صدور بخشنامه عفو از زندان رجایی شهر کرج آزاد شد.
