در جریان اعتراضات روز جمعه ۱۹ دی در تاکستان، استان قزوین، علی طاهرخانی هدف شلیک مستقیم ساچمه ای نیروهای امنیتی به صورت و سینه قرار گرفت.
او همان شب به یکی از بیمارستان های قزوین منتقل شد، اما به دلیل شدت جراحات، روز بعد جان باخت.
نیروهای امنیتی در ابتدا برای تحویل پیکر او مبلغ ۳ میلیارد تومان از خانواده اش مطالبه کردند. در نهایت، تحویل پیکر را مشروط به برگزاری مراسم خاکسپاری با حضور حداکثر چهار نفر و جمع آوری تمامی بنرها و نمادهای یادبود از منزل خانواده کردند.
