Saeed Zeinali, a computer science graduate from the University of Tehran, is considered a symbol of enforced disappearances in Iran. He was arrested at his home during the events at the University of Tehran dormitory, and since then, there has been no information about his fate. Three months after his arrest, he made a phone call to his mother, stating that he was well and asked them to follow up on his affairs; this was the last time his voice was heard. It has been reported that Saeed's voice was heard in interrogation rooms. Security agencies informed the family that he was detained by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' intelligence protection and was held in Evin Prison at least until 2002.
In 2015, it was announced that there was no evidence of Saeed Zeinali's detention in the intelligence and judicial systems. His mother rejected this claim, emphasizing that the prosecutor's office and the Towhid Detention Centre had repeatedly contacted her, inquiring about Saeed's activities. She stated that during her own detention, interrogators told her, "After 12 years, you came looking for bones?" which she interpreted as an indication of Saeed's death. Nevertheless, the family continues to seek the truth or at least the location of his burial.
The Zeinali family has faced repeated suppression, arrests, and threats due to their more than two decades of persistent advocacy. His mother and sister were arrested in 2010 on charges of activities against the regime. His mother has been detained multiple times for giving interviews to the media and participating in gatherings. His father was arrested in 2014 during a gathering in front of Evin Prison and was pressured to abandon the case. He was sentenced to 91 days in prison and 74 lashes.
Amnesty International has repeatedly referred to Saeed Zeinali's case as an enforced disappearance in its statements and has called for Iranian authorities to be held accountable and for justice to be served for the family.
