A source close to the family of Bahareh Shah Mehri, a student and protester killed in the anti-government protests of January 2026, has provided new details about her death to the Iranian Human Rights Organization. Bahareh Shah Mehri, born on May 9, 2008, was a twelfth-grade graphic design student and also worked as a hairdresser. She was killed on the evening of January 9, 2026, by direct gunfire from government agents in the Farahbakhsh Gharbi area of Nishapur.

A source close to Bahareh Shah Mehri's family told the Iranian Human Rights Organization: "After the suppressive forces dispersed the protesters by firing bullets, Bahareh, along with her mother and two friends, sought refuge in a neighbor’s house and stayed there for about an hour. As the gunfire subsided, they encountered around 20 armed forces lined up with bulletproof vests, black helmets, and motorcycles in the Azadi Square area while returning home through nearby alleys."

The source added: "The armed forces initially fired pellet bullets at the protesters, and people wanted to move away from the area. However, a sniper shot Bahareh in her left side. The bullet entered her body from the back and struck below her left breast. According to eyewitnesses, the impact site and the bullet's path were larger than usual bullets. Bahareh's mother and neighbors immediately moved her to the parking area of a nearby house and transported her by car to Hakim Hospital in Nishapur. Bahareh's vital signs had ceased before reaching the hospital door."
