On August 22, 2023, Mohammadreza Mehremi, a resident of Tabriz, the capital of East Azerbaijan Province, was arrested by law enforcement officers during a football match held at the (Yadegar-e Emam) Stadium in Tabriz. After a case was filed against him, he was transferred to the central prison of Tabriz.
According to a knowledgeable individual in a conversation with the Human Rights Reporter in Iran, "Based on what the arresting officers stated, Mr. Mehremi was accused of 'disrupting public order' and 'chanting unconventional slogans with the intent to disturb public minds.' However, relatives of this citizen, who witnessed the incident at the stadium, reported that the officers prevented Mr. Mehremi from entering the stadium because his shirt featured an image of Lake Urmia with the slogan 'Orumieh Lake Should Not Dry Up.' Eventually, he was arrested with the use of force."
As of the time this report was prepared, there is no information available regarding the legal proceedings of Mohammadreza Mehremi's case or whether bail has been issued for his release.
