As a religious leader, Pastor Yousefi wielded significant influence. He was an active supporter of the "Assemblies of God" (Jama'at-e Rabbani), which was the largest community of Persian-speaking Protestants in Tehran at the time.
Prior to his death, he had been detained and threatened on several occasions.
His wife recounts: "It was 4:00 PM when they called our home and said he had been in an accident. I said to myself, 'His car is still at home; how could he have been in an accident?' Then, they changed the story to suicide."
