Hamid Hosseinbeig Araqi, athlete and the eldest child of a family of four in southern Tehran, passed away during the events following the presidential election in 2009. According to his family, he was a calm and family-oriented individual, uninvolved in political activities. His case became one of the controversial incidents of that period.
On the evening of 20 June 2009, Hamid left home to visit his sick grandmother but never returned. After days of fruitless searching in prisons and hospitals, his parents eventually identified his body among images of unidentified corpses at the forensic medicine facility.
Autopsy reports and images of Hamid's body indicated severe violence. The cause of death was declared as a gunshot wound from a Kalashnikov rifle to the chest from a distance of less than 15 metres. His face was covered in blood, with broken front teeth, a bruised nose, and other facial bruises.
His body was transferred to the morgue as "unidentified," despite having identification documents and a motorcycle with him when he left home. These belongings were never returned to the family. Government media immediately labelled him as a "Basij martyr" and published fabricated interviews quoting his mother as calling for the prosecution of protesters. However, Hamid's mother denied his membership in the Basij.
حمید حسین بیگ عراقی، ورزشکار و فرزند بزرگ خانواده ای چهار نفره در جنوب تهران بود. او در جریان وقایع پس از انتخابات ریاست جمهوری سال ۱۳۸۸ جان باخت و به یکی از پرونده های بحث برانگیز آن دوران تبدیل شد.
در شامگاه ۳۰ خرداد، حمید برای عیادت از مادربزرگ بیمارش از خانه خارج شد اما هرگز بازنگشت. پس از روزها جست وجوی بی حاصل در زندان ها و بیمارستان ها، والدین او سرانجام پیکر فرزندشان را در میان تصاویر اجساد مجهول الهویه در پزشکی قانونی شناسایی کردند.
گزارش های کالبدشکافی و تصاویر پیکر حمید نشان دهنده خشونتی عریان بود. علت مرگ اصابت گلوله جنگی (کلاشینکف) به قفسه سینه از فاصله کمتر از ۱۵ متر اعلام شد. صورت او کاملاً خون آلود، دندان های جلویی شکسته، بینی ضرب دیده و بخش هایی از صورتش کبود بود.
پیکر او در حالی به عنوان «ناشناس» به سردخانه منتقل شده بود که در زمان خروج از خانه، مدارک شناسایی و موتورسیلکت همراه داشت؛ اموالی که هرگز به خانواده بازگردانده نشد.
رسانه های حکومتی بلافاصله او را «شهید بسیجی» معرفی کرده و مصاحبه های ساختگی از قول مادرش مبنی بر درخواست محاکمه معترضان منتشر کردند.
اما مادر حمید عضویت او در بسیج را تکذیب کرد.
