Jalil Abedi

Jalil Abedi, born in 1980 in Meshgin Shahr, Ardabil, was involved in protests following a controversial cartoon published by the Iran newspaper. The protests began on 22 May 2006, affecting cities in the provinces of West Azerbaijan, East Azerbaijan, and Ardabil. On Thursday, 25 May 2006, Jalil Abedi, along with several students, participated in the front line of demonstrations in Meshgin Shahr. As they marched towards the governor's office, chanting slogans, they encountered police and plainclothes officers. During the confrontation, a plainclothes officer from the police force shot Jalil Abedi, resulting in his immediate death. His body was taken to the hospital and later released to his family after they agreed to hold a private burial without guests and to refrain from holding a memorial service at the mosque. The burial took place on Friday in Meshgin Shahr under heavy police presence.
