The human rights organisation has reported the death of Mehran Akrami, one of the detainees from the nationwide protests in Saqqez. It has been reported that this individual, originally from Takab, died under torture.
According to the report, Mehran Akrami passed away on 13 March 2024 in Saqqez prison, and his body was buried in Takab under strict security measures.
Mehran Akrami was arrested on 12 November 2022 during the "Woman, Life, Freedom" protests and had been held in the Saqqez Intelligence Detention Centre since then. It was reported that the Saqqez Intelligence Office contacted his family to inform them of his death and instructed them to collect his body. However, upon the family's arrival at the central prison in Saqqez, they were told that the body was at Imam Khomeini Hospital.
Upon visiting the hospital, the Akrami family learned that Mehran's body had been transferred to the forensic doctor for an autopsy. The release of the body was contingent upon Mehran's father signing a document stating that the autopsy results would be provided to them in a year.
Reports indicate that Mehran Akrami was severely beaten and tortured at the Saqqez Intelligence Detention Centre and was transferred to Imam Khomeini Hospital due to the sudden failure of both kidneys.
The Akrami family stated that they visited their son on a Tuesday, where two security officers were present in his room, and he was tied to the bed.
After being hospitalised for several days and undergoing dialysis, Mehran Akrami was returned to prison on the recommendation of his attending physician. A few hours after his return to prison, he was transferred to the Intelligence Detention Centre, where he died.
Upon seeing his body, Mehran Akrami's family noticed that he had a fracture at the back of his head, severe injuries above his eyebrow and on his head, and was bleeding from the nose, ears, and mouth.
Mehran Akrami was a taekwondo athlete with several provincial and national titles in the sport. He had previously been arrested for his political activities, and his brother and cousin were also detained during the nationwide protests in Takab.
According to statistics provided by Hengaw, Mehran Akrami is the twelfth Kurdish citizen to have died under torture by the security agencies of the Islamic Republic of Iran after being detained during the nationwide protests.
