Soleyman Abdi

Reports indicate that on 20 July 2023, Soleiman Abdi, a teacher and member of the Kurdistan Teachers' Union in Saqqez, was sentenced by the criminal court of this city to eight months in prison and 70 lashes. It has been reported that Soleiman Abdi was recently convicted of "disturbing public order and peace by participating in an illegal gathering at the Aichi cemetery," resulting in a sentence of eight months' imprisonment and 70 lashes.

It was also announced that the eight-month prison sentence was converted to 720 hours of teaching for individuals under the support of the Imam Khomeini Relief Foundation, and the 70 lashes were suspended for two years and six months.

This teachers' union activist was arrested at his workplace by Saqqez intelligence forces on 19 March 2023 and transferred to the Sanandaj Intelligence Detention Centre. Soleiman Abdi was moved to Saqqez Central Prison on 5 April and, after 23 days of detention, was temporarily released on 10 April 2023 from Saqqez Central Prison on bail of 200 million tomans until the end of the legal proceedings.

Reports show that Soleiman Abdi had previously been arrested in 2022 due to his activities. On 27 September 2024, Soleiman Abdi, a teacher and cultural union activist from Saqqez, was released after completing his prison term.
