Hosein Afkari

On 2 May 2023, it was reported that the father of Saeed Afkari was detained by security forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Details regarding his whereabouts or the reasons for his arrest are not available.

Previously, Hossein and Hamid Afkari, the father and one of the brothers of Navid Afkari, were detained for several hours by security forces while visiting Navid's grave in the village cemetery of Sanger in the Homayjan area of Sepidan County.

Navid Afkari, a former Iranian wrestler, was arrested in July 2018 during protests in Shiraz and was accused of involvement in the death of an employee of a security organisation. He was executed on 10 September 2020 and buried at night, despite ambiguities raised by his lawyers and a global campaign against his death sentence.

Vahid and Habib Afkari, who were arrested alongside Navid, were sentenced to 54 years and six months in prison with 74 lashes and 27 years and three months in prison with 74 lashes, respectively. Habib Afkari was held in solitary confinement for an extended period and was released on 5 March 2022, while Vahid Afkari remains in solitary confinement.

Elham Afkari, Navid Afkari's sister, was arrested by the Shiraz Intelligence Department on 10 November 2022. In December 2022, she was sentenced to five years in prison by a Shiraz court. Following her arrest, reports emerged claiming she was a key figure in the Iran International network within Iran and had played a role in the protests known as "Woman, Life, Freedom." It was also alleged that she was detained while attempting to leave the country, a claim denied by the Afkari family.
