On 20 June 2009, Yaqub Borouyeh was injured near the Basij base of Loulagar Mosque in Tehran during a shooting incident involving Basij forces from the rooftop of the mosque. He sustained injuries to his arm and head and was taken to Loghman Hakim Hospital by local residents. After spending ten days in a coma, he passed away at Loghman Hakim Hospital on Wednesday, 1 July 2009.
In response to this incident, the Basij base at Loulagar Mosque was set on fire by angry citizens. The following day, Iranian state television reported that the mosque had been set ablaze by "rioters" the previous night during the Maghrib call to prayer, and several worshippers were reportedly killed. However, images showed that the incident occurred during the day, and the report of worshippers being killed was denied on the same day.
On the day of the incident, Yaqub Borouyeh was present with some friends among the protesters. However, after security and Basij forces attacked the demonstrators, his friends lost track of him due to tear gas being fired.
Images exist showing Yaqub Borouyeh injured on the ground, with wounds to his shoulder and head, being moved by people shouting "Allahu Akbar" to another location.
His family buried his body on Friday, 3 July 2009, in the village of Borouyeh, near Ahvaz, in a ceremony attended by local residents and under the presence of security forces. The security forces did not hand over his body to the family, and the burial was conducted under security measures.
یعقوب بروایه در ۳۰ خرداد ۱۳۸۸ در حوالی پایگاه بسیج مسجد لولاگر تهران در جریان تیراندازی نیروهای بسیجی از پشت بام این مسجد مورد اصابت دو گلوله قرار گرفت و از ناحیه بازو و سر مجروح شد. مردم، وی را به بیمارستان لقمان حکیم منتقل کردند. او ۱۰ روز در کما بسر برد و در روز چهارشنبه دهم تیر ۱۳۸۸ در بیمارستان لقمان حکیم جان باخت.
در واکنش به این حمله، پایگاه بسیج مسجد لولاگر از سوی مردم خشمگین به آتش کشیده شد. فردای آن روز، تلویزیون دولتی ایران از به آتش کشیده شدن این مسجد توسط «آشوبگران» در شب پیش به هنگام اذان مغرب و کشته شدن چند تن از نمازگزاران خبر داد. این در حالی بود که طبق تصاویر نشان داده شده، زمان وقوع این حادثه، روز بوده است. به علاوه، خبر کشته شدن نمازگزاران در همان روز تکذیب شد.
یعقوب بروایه در همان روز به همراه بعضی از دوستانش در جمع معترضان حضور داشت اما پس از حملهٔ نیروهای امنیتی و بسیج به تظاهرات کنندگان، دوستان آقای بروایه در اثر شلیک گاز اشک آور، او را گم کردند.
تصاویری از پیکر زخمی شدن یعقوب بروایه بر روی زمین، در حالی که از ناحیهٔ کتف و سر زخمی شده و از سوی مردم با فریاد «الله اکبر» به مکانی دیگر منتقل می شود، نیز وجود دارد.
خانواده، پیکر او را روز جمعه دوازدهم تیرماه 1388 در روستای بروایه از توابع اهواز، با حضور مردم و فضای امنیتی ماموران به خاک سپردند. نیروهای امنیتی پیکر فرزندشان را به خانواده تحویل ندادند و خاک سپاری نیز تحت تدابیر نیروهای امنیتی برگزار شد.
