Mahdieh Haji Ghasemi was an architect who had become a prominent member of Toronto's immigrant community. She designed churches, restaurants, and urban spaces.
Mahdieh and her two children, Arsam Niazi and Arnika Niazi, were passengers aboard Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752. In the early hours of 8 January 2020, the aircraft was shot down over Tehran by missiles fired by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), killing them along with the other 173 people on board.
