Yaqub Karimpour, a resident of Miandoab and a follower of the Yarsan faith, graduated in law from Maragheh University. He was married and had a physical disability, receiving support from the Welfare Organisation due to his condition prior to his arrest.
In June 2025, Yaqub Karimpour was arrested by security forces and transferred to the detention centre of the Intelligence Department in Urmia for interrogation. Reports from human rights organisations indicated that he was held in the security detention centre for over two months without access to a lawyer or family visits. These reports also mentioned pressure to extract forced confessions and allegations of torture and mistreatment during detention, which have not been addressed by the Islamic Republic authorities.
Yaqub Karimpour's case was heard in the First Branch of the Revolutionary Court in Urmia, where he was sentenced to death on charges of "corruption on earth through espionage for Israel." The Supreme Court later upheld his death sentence. Human rights organisations criticised the handling of the case, citing a lack of fair trial standards, inadequate access to legal representation, and reliance on confessions obtained during detention.
On the morning of 1 May 2026, Yaqub Karimpour's execution was carried out in Urmia Central Prison. Reports indicated that the execution was conducted without prior notice to his family and lawyer. Human rights organisations condemned the execution due to ambiguities in the judicial process and allegations of torture and forced confessions.
Yaqub Karimpour's case has received widespread attention in reports from human rights organisations and international media due to the security-related charges, allegations of rights violations during detention and trial, and the execution of the sentence.
