Majidreza Rahnavard, a wrestler and one of those detained during the 2022 Iran protests, was executed on 12 December 2022 following a verdict by the Mashhad Revolutionary Court. He had been accused of killing two Basij members and injuring four others during the protests in Mashhad. The execution prompted widespread reactions both in Iran and internationally.
Rahnavard was arrested on 19 November 2022 during the nationwide protests. His trial and sentencing were conducted swiftly, and he was tried for allegedly attacking six Basij members on 17 November on Har Ameli Street in Mashhad. The judge issued a verdict of "enmity against God," and his execution was carried out in less than two weeks after the court session.
Human rights activists described his trial process as unfair. Reports indicate that he was not allowed to have a chosen or appointed lawyer and did not have the opportunity to defend himself in court. His family hired a lawyer, but the court dismissed this lawyer and appointed a public defender. The public defender's defence reportedly confirmed all the charges against Rahnavard.
Several days after the execution, a video was released by media affiliated with the Islamic Republic showing Majidreza Rahnavard with a broken hand and blindfolded. In the video, he discusses his will and expresses his wish not to have a religious ceremony held for him.
مجیدرضا رهنورد، کشتی گیر و یکی از بازداشت شدگان خیزش ۱۴۰۱ ایران، در ۲۱ آذر ۱۴۰۱ با حکم دادگاه انقلاب مشهد اعدام شد. او به کشتن دو بسیجی و زخمی کردن چهار بسیجی دیگر در جریان خیزش ۱۴۰۱ ایران در مشهد متهم شده بود. این اعدام باعث واکنش های گسترده ای در ایران و جهان شد.
رهنورد در ۲۸ آبان ۱۴۰۱ در جریان خیزش سراسری بازداشت شد. فرایند دادگاه و صدور حکم او به سرعت انجام شد و او به اتهام حمله به شش بسیجی در ۲۶ آبان در خیابان "حر عاملی" مشهد محاکمه شد. قاضی برای او حکم "محاربه" صادر کرد و حکم اعدام او در کمتر از دو هفته از جلسه دادگاه اجرا شد.
فعالان حقوق بشر روند دادرسی او را ناعادلانه توصیف کردند. گزارش ها حاکی از آن است که او امکان بهره بردن از وکیل تعیینی یا انتخابی نداشته و در دادگاه نیز فرصت دفاع از خود را پیدا نکرده بود. خانواده او وکیلی استخدام کردند اما دادگاه آن وکیل را برکنار و وکیل تسخیری برای او تعیین کرد. دفاعیه وکیل تسخیری نشان می دهد که این وکیل تمامی اتهامات وارده به موکل خود را تأیید کرده است.
چند روز پس از اعدام، ویدیویی از رسانه های وابسته به جمهوری اسلامی منتشر شد که در آن مجیدرضا رهنورد با دست شکسته و چشم بند دیده می شود. در این ویدیو، او درباره وصیت نامه خود صحبت می کند و از عدم تمایل به برگزاری مراسم مذهبی برای خود می گوید.
