On January 8, 2026, coinciding with a general strike in various cities of Kurdistan, nine political prisoners held in Sanandaj Central Prison announced in a statement that they were beginning a hunger strike in solidarity with this protest movement.

Labour activist Rafiq Salimi, a Kurdish resident of Sanandaj, is among the political prisoners who, along with his son Fuad Salimi, was detained by security forces since December 2022.
