Ruhollah Zam, an Iranian journalist and political activist, was executed on 12 December 2020. He was known for founding the website and Telegram channel Amadnews, which gained recognition for publishing documents related to government corruption.
Zam was the son of Mohammad Ali Zam, a cleric with close ties to the government. During the period when his father led the Islamic Propagation Organization's Art Bureau, Zam studied theatre and cinema. Following the 2009 election, he was arrested and tortured due to his association with Mehdi Karroubi's campaign and collaboration with Saham News. In May 2011, Zam relocated to Malaysia and later sought asylum in France, where he established Amadnews. The channel disseminated various news and information and gained attention during the December 2017 protests. At the request of Iran's Minister of Communications, Telegram blocked Amadnews, but it was replaced by another channel named "Voice of the People."
In October 2019, Zam was arrested during a trip to Iraq and transferred to Iran. He was sentenced to death by a public and revolutionary court on charges of "corruption on earth." The sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court, leading to his execution on 12 December 2020.
After leaving Iran, Zam launched the Amadnews website and Telegram channel, which became a trusted source for protesters during the 2017 demonstrations. In March 2019, a documentary aired by the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting claimed that Zam was manipulated by Iranian intelligence forces.
On 14 October 2019, Iranian media reported Zam's arrest by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Intelligence Organization. The Revolutionary Guard announced that Zam had been lured back into the country and arrested. Following his arrest, several high-ranking officials reacted to the event. Zam faced various charges in court, including "corruption on earth" and "espionage," ultimately resulting in a death sentence.
Zam was executed at dawn on 12 December 2020. Prior to his execution, he met with his family and was on a dry hunger strike. His family was unaware of the execution until after it occurred. Mohammad Ali Zam, Ruhollah Zam's father, wrote in a note that security agents had promised his son an exchange with "someone from the other side" as per the head of the judiciary's decision. He also emphasized that Ruhollah Zam was denied the right to write a will and was not informed of the execution date.
روح الله زم (۵ مرداد ۱۳۵۷ – ۲۲ آذر ۱۳۹۹) روزنامه نگار و فعال سیاسی اهل ایران بود. او وبگاه و کانال تلگرامی آمدنیوز را تأسیس کرد و برای انتشار اسناد فساد حکومتی شناخته شد.
روح الله زم فرزند محمدعلی زم، از روحانیون نزدیک به حکومت بود. او در دوره ای که پدرش ریاست حوزه هنری سازمان تبلیغات اسلامی را برعهده داشت، دوره های تئاتر و سینما را گذراند. پس از انتخابات ۱۳۸۸، زم به دلیل نزدیکی به ستاد انتخاباتی مهدی کروبی و همکاری با سحام نیوز بازداشت و شکنجه شد. او در خرداد ۱۳۹۰ به مالزی رفت و سپس به فرانسه پناهنده شد و آمدنیوز را تأسیس کرد. این کانال به انتشار اخبار و اطلاعات مختلف می پرداخت و در جریان اعتراضات دی ۱۳۹۶ به عنوان رسانه ای مورد توجه قرار گرفت. تلگرام به درخواست وزیر ارتباطات ایران، کانال آمدنیوز را مسدود کرد، اما کانال دیگری به نام «صدای مردم» جایگزین آن شد.
زم در مهر ۱۳۹۸ در سفر به عراق بازداشت و به ایران منتقل شد. او در دادگاه عمومی و دادگاه انقلاب به اتهام «افساد فی الارض» به اعدام محکوم شد و پس از تأیید حکم در دیوان عالی کشور، در ۲۲ آذر ۱۳۹۹ اعدام شد.
زم پس از خروج از ایران، سایت و کانال تلگرامی آمدنیوز را راه اندازی کرد. این رسانه در جریان اعتراضات سال ۱۳۹۶ به عنوان رسانه ای مورد اعتماد معترضان شناخته شد. در اسفند ۱۳۹۷ مستندی از صدا و سیمای جمهوری اسلامی ایران پخش شد که در آن ادعا شد زم بازیچهٔ نیروهای اطلاعاتی ایران بوده است.
در ۲۲ مهر ۱۳۹۸ رسانه های ایران خبر از دستگیری زم توسط سازمان اطلاعات سپاه دادند. سپاه پاسداران اعلام کرد که زم را به داخل کشور هدایت و بازداشت کرده اند. پس از دستگیری، برخی مقامات بلندپایه به این موضوع واکنش نشان دادند. زم در دادگاه های مختلف به اتهاماتی از جمله «افساد فی الارض» و «جاسوسی» متهم شد و در نهایت به اعدام محکوم شد.
زم در سحرگاه ۲۲ آذر ۱۳۹۹ اعدام شد. پیش از اعدام، او با خانواده اش ملاقات کرد و در اعتصاب غذای خشک بود. خانواده اش از اجرای حکم اعدام بی خبر بودند و پس از اعدام از آن مطلع شدند. محمدعلی زم، پدر روح الله زم، در یادداشتی نوشت که مأموران امنیتی به فرزندش وعده داده بودند که قرار است طبق نظر رئیس قوه قضاییه با «یک نفر از آن طرف» مبادله شود. او همچنین تأکید کرد که حق نوشتن وصیت نامه و اطلاع از زمان اعدام از روح الله زم گرفته شده بود.
