Motaleb Ahmadian

According to reports from the Kurdistan Human Rights Network Matlab Ahmadian who was sentenced to 39 years in prison in 2010 is in critical physical condition due to a diaphragmatic hernia and a duodenal tumor. He is in urgent need of specialized medical treatment. The presence of a tumor in the duodenum and severe vomiting have caused his weight to drop to less than 35 kilograms.

Ahmadian was abducted by security forces in 2010 and was sentenced to 39 years in exile on charges including armed rebellion and participation in murder after multiple legal proceedings. Since his arrest he has been held in various prisons including Saqqez Sanandaj Rajai Shahr and Evin.

Officials at Evin Prison have informed Ahmadian who suffers from a diaphragmatic hernia a duodenal tumor and spinal canal stenosis that all his medical documents created at Rajai Shahr Prison are invalid. They stated that he must be transferred to medical facilities only after obtaining permission from the Tehran Prosecutors Office and decisions regarding surgery and other treatment steps will be made after a forensic medical file is established.

Additionally Evin Prison officials have indicated that if forensic permission is granted all costs for surgery and treatment will be the responsibility of Ahmadian. Following the urgent surgery he will be returned to prison to recover despite medical professionals estimating that his recovery period will exceed six months. They have described the conditions in prison given the limited health facilities and overcrowding as dangerous for his recovery.

Previously Ahmadian suffered for years from orchitis an infection of the testicles and underwent surgery in December 2022 at a medical facility outside of prison. He was returned to Rajai Shahr Prison the day after the surgery without completing the treatment.

In January 2020 Ahmadian described his physical condition as deteriorating due to a lack of access to medical services. He cited infections in the testicular area and three fractured vertebrae resulting from torture during his detention attributing the worsening of his health to the lack of timely treatment. He reported that the prison had refused to cover the costs of surgery and medications before and after the operation. According to prison regulations the costs of treatment and medications for inmates are the responsibility of the prison; however Ahmadian has paid for all his medical transfers and medications himself and has refrained from pursuing further treatment due to his inability to cover additional costs.
