Dr. Abdolreza Soudbakhsh, a specialist in infectious diseases and a prominent academic at Tehran University of Medical Sciences, was assassinated in an incident linked to the Kahrizak detention centre events. He was the head of the infectious diseases department at Imam Khomeini Hospital and was frequently consulted on critical medical cases due to his expertise. Dr. Soudbakhsh was known for his good reputation, medical ethics, and avoidance of political activities.
Following the incidents at the Kahrizak detention centre in the summer of 2009, several detainees who had suffered severe injuries and infections due to torture were sent to him for treatment or examination.
It is reported that Dr. Soudbakhsh, despite security pressures, refused to attribute the cause of death or injuries of detainees, such as Mohsen Rouholamini, to illnesses like meningitis and insisted on the occurrence of torture.
On the evening of 21 September 2010, Dr. Soudbakhsh was assassinated by unknown individuals on a motorcycle as he was leaving his clinic on Keshavarz Boulevard in Tehran. His assassination occurred only a few days after the suspicious killing of another specialist, Dr. Gholamreza Sarabi. Initially, authorities attempted to portray the motive for the assassination as personal, but the evidence and timing of the incident strengthened the theory of the physical elimination of witnesses related to the Kahrizak case.
As with many similar cases, the perpetrators of his assassination were never identified or prosecuted. His family and colleagues consistently remember him as a physician who fell victim to his professional integrity and adherence to the medical oath.
