Mohammadreza Moradbahrouzi was first arrested by security forces in Qazvin on 21 August 2021 on the charge of "insulting the Supreme Leader." Following judicial proceedings, the Revolutionary Court of Qazvin Province sentenced him to one year of discretionary imprisonment and a fine of 10 million tomans.

In connection with a second case arising from his support for the women's civil rights movement, including the "No to Compulsory Hijab" campaign, he was arrested by security forces in Qazvin Province on 15 July 2022. After interrogation, he was charged during the investigation stage with "encouraging people to commit acts contrary to public morality." He was subsequently sentenced by Branch 2 of the Criminal Court of Qazvin Province to 10 months' discretionary imprisonment. He also received a sentence of eight months and ten days' discretionary imprisonment on the charge of "spreading falsehoods online." However, he was later acquitted of the "spreading falsehoods" charge.

On 19 June 2023, Branch 3 of the Revolutionary Court of Qazvin Province convicted Mohammadreza Moradbahrouzi of "propaganda against the state" and sentenced him to one year of discretionary imprisonment, with credit for time already spent in detention. Following the application of Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, under which multiple sentences are consolidated, enforcement of this particular sentence was cancelled. He was released from Choobindar (Central) Prison in Qazvin on 5 July 2023, after completing his one-year prison term.

However, on 16 July 2023, security forces raided his home and arrested him again. After being transferred to Branch 3 of the Investigative Prosecutor's Office in Mohammadiyeh, he was formally charged with "disobeying law enforcement officers while on duty," "assaulting sentence enforcement officers," and "disrupting public order." He was released on a recognisance order. On 25 July 2023, he received a written summons to appear before Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Prosecutor's Office in Qazvin.

On 25 April 2024, he received a written summons to attend a court hearing. On 3 May 2024, Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Qazvin convicted him of "propaganda against the state through publishing content on social media platforms, including Instagram." He was sentenced to one year of discretionary imprisonment and a two-year ban on leaving the country.

On 21 May 2025, Mohammadreza Moradbahrouzi was summoned to Branch 1 of the Sentence Enforcement Office of the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor's Office in Qazvin Province to begin serving his sentence under a judicial electronic monitoring scheme. After an electronic ankle monitor was fitted, he was released. However, on 23 June 2025, after the electronic monitoring order was revoked, he was summoned back to the Sentence Enforcement Office, arrested, and transferred to Choobindar Prison to serve the remainder of his sentence. He was released from Qazvin Central Prison on 15 October 2025 after completing his sentence.

Subsequently, a new criminal case was opened against him on charges including "sending videos and information to anti-government media outlets or hostile networks with the intention of disrupting national security" and "intelligence activities for Israel." After appearing for questioning and being formally charged on 13 June 2026, he was arrested and transferred to Qazvin Central (Choobindar) Prison.

On 29 June 2026, he was transferred from the political prisoners' ward to Ward 2, which houses non-political prisoners, including inmates convicted of premeditated murder, armed robbery, and other serious offences. There, he was severely assaulted by violent inmates, sustaining serious injuries to his face, ribs, and shoulder. He was subsequently taken to hospital.

On 21 July 2026, he was released from prison after posting bail of five billion tomans.
