The political prisoner, Saeed Eghbali, has published a letter describing his experience near the site of weekly executions at Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj. In part of this note, Mr. Eghbali describes the conditions of execution in this prison, writing: "The sound of cars actively coming and going for the execution ceremony on Tuesday nights can be heard from behind the barred windows of my room. Familiar sounds that have nested in every brick of this prison from the 1980s to today."

"Execution Narrative from Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj
The first time I encountered the concept of execution, I was a young child and saw death struggling in the main square of our town. But after being exiled to Rajai Shahr, I felt execution with my entire being.
Before anything else, I want to remember my dear friend and cellmate Behnam Mahjoubi, who also had the noose placed around his neck. A friend who perished before my eyes, and even now, when I look at his photo above my bed, my heart burns from all that cruelty and oppression, and I recall my loneliness and my sobbing in the bathroom of Ward 8!
For people like me, who are from the lowest and most forgotten class of society, death and loss are commonplace with the existence of oppressors. Loss and death of life, property, job, dreams, peace, love, and everything! In our class, you lose, or better to say, it is snatched from you, like Behnam Mahjoubi...
In Rajai Shahr Prison, this process takes on an even more terrifying form, with weekly executions! Here, there is a place called the 'Suite,' which consists of several solitary cells used for various purposes. Punitive transfers of those who engage in fights, strikers, and those who allegedly commit 'prison offenses' are sent to these solitary cells. But the most terrifying is the transfer of prisoners sentenced to death to these cells a few days before the execution of their sentence.
Wednesday mornings are the days of execution in a place near our current ward (Ward 4). Sometimes two or three people, and sometimes more than ten prisoners, are transferred to this location for execution. Prison officials, the prosecutor's office, and the execution of sentences also participate in this ceremony to ensure the execution and death of the prisoner! The sound of cars actively coming and going for the execution ceremony on Tuesday nights can be heard from behind the barred windows of my room. Familiar sounds that have nested in every brick of this prison from the 1980s to today.
The sound of the cars reminds me of Zaniar and Loghman, whose graves are not even marked! I remember all the faces I see in the meeting hall and the main corridor! On Tuesday nights, I ask myself which one of them had the noose placed around their neck today?! They all remind me of my dear Behnam...
Every day, I see people here who have been sentenced to death on various charges and spend every moment of their imprisonment with anxiety and fear. Every time their name is called for various reasons, they turn pale, and to give themselves hope, even for a brief moment, they joke and laugh with their cellmates and say: Forgive me, guys...
Before Tuesday, the days are filled with worry and anxiety that they might be attacked with sticks and batons, handcuffed and shackled, and transferred to the Suite, and on Wednesday morning, a lever is pulled, and it's over...
How many people here have died and come back to life a thousand times before death in solitary confinement, where the stench drips from the walls and the cold is bone-chilling! The drugs and pills that prison officials give to ease their conscience in the last moments of a condemned person's life do not answer their question of why they must die. Who decides that I should die? An 80-year-old man who considers himself God's representative on earth?!
I know people here who have spent nights wall-to-wall with a person condemned to death and still can't get the sound of their moans, screams, and chains, and the beatings they received from the guards out of their ears! I also spent a short time in Ward 209 in cell 113 with Esmail and Khosro, who were sentenced to death, and in the end, they were executed before I left Ward 209.
The root and reason for every murder, rape, and theft can be found in the structure of a regime that itself is the producer and promoter of poverty, injustice, wrongness, corruption, death, and suffocation. Every person sentenced to death is a mirror image of myself. Because they are from the same class and people whose dreams and aspirations have been ruined in the dark world created by the Islamic Republic, and now they must go with trembling legs to face a predetermined death.
The author of this narrative is not Saeed Eghbali from Rajai Shahr; I am the same worker who fell from the top of a building! A grave sleeper in Behesht Zahra, a prostitute whose body and soul have been set on fire, a child searching for their childhood in the trash can, an addict with a syringe in hand under a frozen bridge, that vendor with a bruised eye, and all those who are executed every day under various pretexts and accusations in this air that smells of death, I am!
But with all these experiences and observations that crucify one's existence, let the powerless powerful know! Under these hardships, not only do we not bend, but every noose, bullet, and baton you bestow upon our people makes us more determined and brings you closer to the end.
In memory of my dear brothers Hamzeh Savari, Zaniar and Loghman Moradi, Farzad Kamangar, Ali Saremi, Gholamreza Khosravi, Ramin Hossein Panahi, Reyhaneh Jabbari, and Shirin Alam Holi
