Yusef Mehrdad was executed on charges related to blasphemy. Authorities arrested Mehrdad in Ardabil in May 2020, accusing him and others of being members of a Telegram channel called "Critique of Superstition and Religion." It was alleged that members of the group expressed opinions insulting to religion, including the Prophet Muhammad, and one member reportedly set religious books on fire. Mehrdad was transferred to Arak Prison, where he was reportedly held in solitary confinement for two months and denied family visits and phone calls for eight months after his arrest.
In April 2021, it was reported that Branch 1 of the Arak Criminal Court sentenced Mehrdad and another individual, later identified as Seyyed Sadrullah Fazeli Zare, to death for "insulting Islamic sanctities" and "insulting the Prophet." In May or June 2021, the Arak Revolutionary Court reportedly sentenced Mehrdad to eight years in prison in a separate case for "propaganda against the state," "founding or leading an organization that aims to disrupt national security," and "insulting the Supreme Leader." In July or August 2021, it was reported that the Supreme Court upheld Mehrdad's sentence.
In February 2022, Mehrdad reportedly went on a hunger strike to protest the prison authorities' refusal to allow him to make phone calls. In May 2023, Mehrdad was reportedly moved into solitary confinement in preparation for his imminent execution. However, following international outcry, he returned to the general prison population.
On 8 May 2023, Mehrdad was executed. He was reportedly a father of three.

در فروردین ۱۴۰۰ گزارش شد که شعبه اول دادگاه کیفری اراک مهرداد و فرد دیگری که بعداً به نام سید صدرالله فاضلی زارع شناسایی شد، را به اتهام "توهین به مقدسات اسلامی" و "توهین به پیامبر" به اعدام محکوم کرد. در اردیبهشت یا خرداد ۱۴۰۰ دادگاه انقلاب اراک مهرداد را در پرونده ای جداگانه به اتهام "تبلیغ علیه نظام"، "تأسیس یا رهبری سازمانی با هدف برهم زدن امنیت ملی" و "توهین به رهبر" به هشت سال زندان محکوم کرد. در تیر یا مرداد ۱۴۰۰ گزارش شد که دیوان عالی کشور حکم مهرداد را تأیید کرده است.
در بهمن ۱۴۰۰ مهرداد برای اعتراض به عدم اجازه تماس تلفنی از سوی مقامات زندان دست به اعتصاب غذا زد. در اردیبهشت ۱۴۰۲ مهرداد برای آماده سازی جهت اجرای قریب الوقوع حکم اعدام به سلول انفرادی منتقل شد. با این حال، پس از اعتراضات بین المللی، او به جمعیت عمومی زندان بازگشت.
در ۱۸ اردیبهشت ۱۴۰۲ مهرداد اعدام شد. او پدر سه فرزند بود.
