Negin Bagheri

On 2 September 2023, Elnaz Mohammadi and Negin Bagheri, journalists and media activists residing in Tehran, were sentenced by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court to three years of suspended imprisonment, a five-year travel ban, a prohibition on media activities, and a ban on communication with other journalists and media activists outside the country.

The defense attorney for the defendants stated that each was convicted of conspiracy and was sentenced to three years of suspended imprisonment, with one-fortieth of the sentence to be served and the remainder suspended for five years. The issued ruling stipulated that during the five-year suspension of the prison sentence, the defendants must participate in a professional ethics training course each season, under the coordination and supervision of agents from the Ministry of Intelligence. They are also prohibited from engaging in professional activities related to the committed offense and from communicating with individuals involved in foreign media.

Negin Bagheri was summoned in winter 2022 to Branch 33 of the Tehran District Prosecutor's Office located in Evin Prison, where she was informed of the charges of conspiracy with the intent to commit a crime against national security. She was detained under a bail order and transferred to Evin Prison, from which she was released in mid-February 2023 after posting bail of 1 billion tomans.
