Yaghoub Mahmoudi Azar was arrested by security forces on 27 June 2022 in the village of Singan, in the Oshnavieh County, and was transferred to the detention facility of the Intelligence Department in Urmia. On 2 August 2022, after the completion of the interrogation process and the formal notification of the charges against him, he was transferred to Oshnavieh Prison.
Security forces raided his home and arrested him without presenting any judicial warrant. They also searched his residence during the operation.
On Thursday, 18 August 2022, after the completion of the interrogations, he was temporarily released from prison pending the conclusion of the judicial proceedings upon posting bail of 600 million tomans.
According to a report published by a human rights media outlet on 4 December 2023, Yaghoub Mahmoudi Azar was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment under a ruling issued by Branch One of the Oshnavieh Revolutionary Court. One of the charges brought against him was membership in and cooperation with one of the political parties opposed to the Islamic Republic of Iran.
یعقوب محمودی آذر، در تاریخ ۶ تیرماه ۱۴۰۱، توسط ماموران امنیتی در روستای سینگان از توابع اشنویه بازداشت و به بازداشتگاه اداره اطلاعات ارومیه منتقل شد و در تاریخ ۱۱ مردادماه ۱۴۰۱ پس از اتمام مراحل بازجویی و تفهیم اتهام به زندان اشنویه منتقل شده بود.
نیروهای امنیتی با هجوم به منزل وی بدون ارائه هرگونه برگه قضایی اقدام به بازداشت او نمودند. این نیروها همچنین منزل این شهروند را نیز تفتیش کردند.
روز پنج شنبه ۲۷ مردادماه ۱۴۰۱، وی پس از اتمام مراحل بازجویی ها، با تودیع وثیقه ای به مبلغ ۶۰۰ میلیون تومان بطور موقت و تا اتمام مراحل دادرسی از زندان آزاد شدند.
بنا بر گزارشی از یک رسانه حقوق بشری در ۱۳ آذر ماه ۱۴۰۲، براساس حکمی که توسط شعبه اول دادگاه انقلاب اشنویه صادر شده است، یعقوب محمودی آذر به هفت سال حبس محکوم شد. یکی از اتهامات مطروحه علیه این شهروند عضویت و همکاری با یکی از احزاب مخالف نظام عنوان شده است.
