شبنم سهرابی در جریان تظاهرات خیابانی روز عاشورا (٦ دی) سال ۱۳۸۸ توسط خودروی نیروی انتظامی زیر گرفته شد. بنابر گزارشها و به نقل از شاهدان عینی، ماشین نیروی انتظامی با سرعت به خانم سهرابی برخورد کرد و بعد از چندین بار رد شدن از رویش، او را زیر چرخ هایش له کرد. خانم سهرابی در این روز به اتفاق دوستانش در منزلش واقع در خیابان شادمان به سر می برد. به گفته دوستش، ظهر عاشورا برای گرفتن نذری از خانه خارج شد، اما تا ساعت پنج بعدازظهر از او خبری نشد، دوستش بیرون از خانه رفت و بعد از پرس وجو متوجه شد زنی با مشخصات خانم سهرابی توسط خودرو نیروی انتظامی زیر گرفته شده که بعد از مراجعه به کلانتری محل مطمئن شد که آن قربانی خانم سهرابی بوده است. این دوست با کمک دخترش که ۶ سال بیشتر نداشت خانه مادرش را پیدا کرد و خبر را به او رساند.
پیکر او ۲۰ روز بعد به خانواده اش تحویل داده شد. مراسم خاکسپاری سهرابی تحت تدابیر امنیتی شدید در قطعه ۸۶ بهشت زهرا برگزار شد.

Shabnam Sohrabi was struck by a police vehicle during street protests on Ashura, 27 December 2009. According to reports and eyewitness accounts, the police vehicle hit Ms. Sohrabi at high speed and ran over her multiple times. On that day, Ms. Sohrabi was at her home on Shadman Street with friends. A friend stated that she left the house at noon to collect food offerings but had not been heard from by 5:00 PM. The friend went outside to inquire and learned that a woman matching Ms. Sohrabi's description had been struck by a police vehicle. After visiting the local police station, it was confirmed that the victim was Ms. Sohrabi. This friend, with the help of her 6 years old daughter, located her mother's house and delivered the news.
Her body was returned to her family 20 days later. The burial ceremony for Sohrabi was held under strict security measures at section 86 of Behesht Zahra Cemetery.
