Cheraghi was arrested on August 10, 1979, at his home in Paveh. He was a businessman and was trusted by the local people. He had a wife and three children. Ayatollah Khalkhali issued a death sentence for him and eight others by firing squad near the outer wall of the hospital, described by the newspapers as "the same place where the IRGC had been brutally massacred." There had been a fierce battle in the hospital.
