An Iranian psychiatrist and politician, who was an active figure in the 1979 revolution, served as the first Minister of Health in the interim government of Mehdi Bazargan and was a representative for Tehran in the first term of the Islamic Consultative Assembly. On 23 November 1988, he was attacked in his private office at Sasan Hospital in Tehran. An individual posing as a patient assaulted him with multiple stab wounds to the head, chest, arms, and neck. His spouse was confined in another room but managed to escape after some time. The doctor was severely injured and, despite medical efforts, passed away on 25 November 1988 in the hospital.
Three weeks later, it was announced that the assailant was identified as Mahmoud Jalilian, who reportedly had a personal vendetta. It was reported that Jalilian hanged himself a few days later in a bathhouse in Ahvaz, and the case was declared closed.
However, various reports about the incident exist. Some sources claimed that Jalilian was killed before the hanging. Additionally, he was found with fake passports and identification documents, suggesting he was a professional. The suspicious death of one of the case's associates added to the uncertainties.
In the final years of his life, the doctor had become a vocal critic of the government and opposed the continuation of the Iran-Iraq war. He was known as one of the few public critics within the country, and the murder occurred during a period of increased pressure on dissenters. The case was never transparently investigated, and the truth remains unresolved.
