کاوه ناصری در جریان تعقیب و گریز توسط نیروهای حکومتی در سنندج کشته شد. گفته شده است که نیروهای امنیتی بدون هشدار قبلی یک خودروی پژو را تحت تعقیب قرار داده و در بلوار کردستان به سوی آن شلیک کردند. پس از متوقف کردن خودرو، راننده با شلیک گلوله جان خود را از دست داد. نیروهای حکومتی ادعا کرده اند که به دلیل اشتباه در تشخیص هویت، به خودرو شلیک کرده اند. خانواده کاوه ناصری پس از جستجو در بیمارستان های سنندج و تماس با دوستان و اقوام، از قتل فرزندشان مطلع شدند. نیروهای امنیتی به خانواده او اعلام کرده اند که به دنبال پیکر فرزندشان نباشند. پس از این حادثه، اطرافیان کاوه ناصری تحت فشار نهادهای امنیتی قرار گرفته اند تا از رسانه ای کردن خبر خودداری کنند. کاوه ناصری ساکن کرج بود و پس از آغاز جنگ به منزل پدر و مادر خود در سنندج بازگشته بود. در ماه های قبل از کشته شدن، او به دلیل ارتفاع اتومبیلش از سوی نیروهای امنیتی مورد بازخواست قرار گرفته بود و نزدیکان او دلیل عدم توقفش را به همین موضوع نسبت می دهند.
