A civil and political activist from Tabriz has recently been sentenced to 9 months of imprisonment by the First Branch of the Revolutionary Court of Tabriz on charges of "propaganda against the regime." The new case was initiated following their arrest in January 2026.

Ali Babaei was initially detained by security forces in Miandoab, West Azerbaijan Province, on 13 September 2023. He was arrested at his workplace with the use of force and subsequently taken to his home, where personal items such as a computer case and several books were confiscated. Following this, he was transferred to a detention centre for interrogation and charges. Eventually, he was moved to the Intelligence Office detention centre in Tabriz Central Prison, where he remained in an uncertain situation.

On 23 December 2023, Ali Babaei, a national civil activist, was released on bail after undergoing interrogation and being charged. He had been held in Tabriz Central Prison, East Azerbaijan Province.

On 26 April 2025, Ali Babaei, a resident of Tabriz, was arrested after being summoned to Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Court in the city. It was reported that he was detained following his appearance at the court and after being charged. His preliminary hearings had taken place in January and February 2025 at Branch 15 of the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor's Office in Tabriz. The court sessions addressing his charges were held in June 2025. He was sentenced to two years and nine months for membership in an illegal group and three years and seven months for assembly and collusion against national security. The verdict was recently issued by Branch 2 of the Tabriz Revolutionary Court and was communicated to him through his lawyer on 29 December 2025.

On 14 January 2026, Ali Babaei was arrested at his workplace in Tabriz by agents from the Intelligence Office. Two days later, he informed his family in his only contact that he was being held in a detention centre of the security agency.

علی بابایی هم در تاریخ ۲۲ شهریور ماه ۱۴۰۲، با نیابت قضایی، توسط نیروهای امنیتی در شهرستان میاندوآب از توابع استان آذربایجان غربی، بازداشت و پس از انتقال به بازداشتگاه یکی از نهادهای امنیتی در آن شهر و طی مراحل بازجویی ها و تفهیم اتهام، در نهایت به بازداشتگاه اداره اطلاعات در زندان مرکزی تبریز، منتقل و در وضعبت بلاتکلیفی بسر برده بود. ماموران امنیتی برای بازداشت علی بابایی، به محل کار وی مراجعه و او را توام با خشونت بازداشت کرده و سپس وی را برای به منزلش منتقل و پس از تفتیش و توقیف برخی لوازم شخصی از قبیل کیس کامپیوتر و چند جلد کتاب، وی را برای بازجویی به بازداشتگاه یکی از نهادهای امنیتی منتقل کردند.

شنبه ۲ دی ماه ۱۴۰۲، علی بابایی، این فعال ملی مدنی، محبوس و بلاتکلیف در زندان مرکزی تبریز مرکز استان آذربایجان شرقی، پس از طی مراحل بازجویی ها و تفهیم اتهام، با تودیع وثیقه میلیون تومانی آزاد شدند.

روز شنبه ۶ اردیبهشت ماه ۱۴۰۴، علی بابایی، ساکن شهر تبریز، پس از احضار به شعبه ۲ دادگاه انقلاب آن شهر، دستگیر شد.

به نقل از یک فرد مطلع در گفتگو با گزارشگر حقوق بشر در ایران:”در پی مراجعه آقای بابایی به شعبه ۲ دادسرای عمومی و انقلاب شهر تبریز و طی مراحل تفهیم اتهام، دستگیر شده است.” جلسات بازپرسی وی پیشتر در دی ماه و بهمن ماه ۱۴۰۳، در شعبه ۱۵ دادسرای عمومی و انقلاب تبریز برگزار شده بود. سپس جلسات دادگاه رسیدگی به اتهامات این فعال ترک (آذربایجانی) در خردادماه ۱۴۰۴ برگزار شد. وی به دو سال و ۹ ماه حبس بابت اتهام عضویت در گروه غیرقانونی و سه سال و هفت ماه حبس بابت اتهام اجتماع و تبانی علیه امنیت کشور، محکوم شد و حکم اخیراً توسط شعبه دوم دادگاه انقلاب تبریز صادر و مورخ ۸ دی ۱۴۰۴، از طریق وکیل به این شهروند ابلاغ شده است.

آقای بابایی در تاریخ ۲۴ دی ماه ۱۴۰۴، در محل کار خود در تبریز توسط ماموران اداره اطلاعات بازداشت شد. وی دو روز بعد، در تنها تماس خود با خانواده اش، اطلاع داد که در بازداشتگاه این نهاد امنیتی نگهداری می شود.
