Mehdi Zarif, one of those arrested during the nationwide protests in January 2026, has been sentenced to death.
Mehdi Zarif, a political prisoner and resident of Shandiz, Mashhad, was arrested during the nationwide protests in Dey 1404 (approximately 22 December 2025 – 20 January 2026).
He was sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court of Mashhad under the Law on Intensifying the Punishment for Espionage and Collaboration with the Zionist Regime and Hostile States.
The court accused him of carrying out an "operational act" on behalf of the United States, Israel, and Reza Pahlavi, although he was arrested solely for participating in the protests.
According to the court's judgment, the principal grounds for the charge included his participation in the Dey 1404 (December 2025–January 2026) protests, carrying a wooden stick, taking flammable gel from a shop, pouring the flammable gel at the entrance of a Dar al-Quran (Quranic education centre), and being present during the vandalism of a Bank Saderat branch.
