On 28 October 2022, during nationwide protests and following the death of a Basij member named Arman Ali Vardi in Ekbatan Town, at least 50 young residents of the area were arrested by security and law enforcement forces. Indictments were issued for 14 of these individuals, and the case became known as the Ekbatan case.
Navid Najjaran, one of the defendants in the Ekbatan Town case, was arrested in Ahvaz in Aban 1401 (November 2022). After initial interrogation, he was transferred to Tehran. Following further interrogations and formal notification of the charges, he was first transferred to Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj and later, on August 1, 2023, to Qezel Hesar Prison in Karaj.
On 30 April 2024, Najaran was moved from Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj to the security ward of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Evin Prison for further questioning. After the interrogation and charges were explained, he was returned to the general ward in Ghezel Hesar Prison on 10 June 2024.
On 14 November 2024, Najaran was sentenced to death by retribution by the judge of Branch 13 of the Criminal Court 1 of Tehran Province.
On 13 September 2025, Payam Derafshan, the defence lawyer for the defendants in this case, announced that the death sentences by retribution and discretionary imprisonment issued against Amir Mohammad Khosh Eqbal, Navid Najaran, Hossein Nemati, and Alireza Bamarzpour Nak had been overturned by the judges of Branch 9 of the Supreme Court.
The verdict for the defendants in the case known as the "Ekbatan Town" was issued by Branch 13 of the Criminal Court 1 of Tehran Province on 4 February 2026 and communicated to them on 19 May 2026. Najaran was acquitted of the charge of participating in premeditated murder due to a lack of evidence indicating he inflicted a blow to a specific area of Arman Ali Vardi's body.
According to Branch 15’s ruling, presided over by Judge Abolqasem Salavati, he was sentenced to death on charges of “enmity against God” (moharebeh). The verdict was communicated to him orally without the presence or knowledge of his lawyers.
