MohamadReza Moghadam

On February 9, 2019, Mohammadreza Moghaddam — son of Mohammad Ali, born in 1992 and a native of Shadegan County — was arrested by agents of the IRGC Intelligence Department in Ahvaz. After the completion of his interrogation, he was formally charged at Branch 12 of the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutors Office in Ahvaz.

On February 16, 2023, Branch 4 of the Revolutionary Court of Ahvaz, the capital of Khuzestan Province, issued a verdict sentencing this political prisoner — who was being held in Ward 5 of Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz — to death.

It should be noted that earlier, Mohammadreza Moghaddam and Ali Mojadam, along with two other political prisoners, had been involved in prison protests in Sheiban Prison related to the COVID19 outbreak. On March 30, 2020, following a riot by inmates protesting the lack of access to gloves, disinfectants, and masks, they were severely beaten and transferred to an unknown location. On June 7 of the same year, after undergoing interrogation and solitary confinement, they were returned to the general ward of Sheiban Prison. During their trial, each was sentenced to three months of discretionary imprisonment on the charge of 'disturbing prison order.'

At dawn on Saturday, October 4, 2025, Moein Khonfari was executed.

The charges brought against him included: 'participation and involvement in armed operations,' 'direct involvement in the armed killing of AllahNazar Safari, Mohammadreza RafieeNasab, Ali SalehiMajd, and Younes Bahr' — all members of the Law Enforcement Forces — 'planning and executing acts of sabotage such as manufacturing and planting bombs,' 'the explosion at the Khorramshahr gas station,' 'armed attacks on banks,' 'throwing grenades at a military center,' and 'shooting at mosques in Khuzestan Province.' It was also alleged that the prisoner was in contact with 'antiregime elements abroad' to carry out these actions.

Karim Dahimi, a human rights activist, told a reporter with Iran Human Rights: 'Firstly, there was a murder in Abadan, and these individuals were arrested about a month later. According to the Abadan governor, the killing was the result of a family dispute. So the fact that these serious charges were attributed to him after his arrest is highly questionable. Moreover, the allegation of “ties to Israel” is completely false.'

He added: 'After the execution, even his body was not handed over to his family. Furthermore, the legal process he underwent — from interrogation to prosecution — involved forced confessions obtained under torture. During the investigation, the interrogators also threatened his family with sexual assault. The prisoner himself was severely beaten and tortured during questioning. His legal proceedings were conducted with a total disregard for the right to a fair trial.'

He further stated: 'The family was threatened and told they were not allowed to hold a mourning ceremony. They were even denied the right to a final visit before the execution, which was carried out without informing the family in advance.'"
