On 13 August 1979, Mr. Ziaei was travelling to Paveh Hospital, his workplace, in a colleague's car when he passed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps intelligence unit. He was detained by the guards without an arrest warrant. Mr. Ziaei was held at the intelligence unit, where he was denied access to a lawyer and visits from his family during his one-week detention. It appears from statements by Mohammad Ali Razizadeh, the religious judge of Kermanshah, that authorities discouraged families from attempting to visit detainees.
Mr. Seyf al-Din Ziaei and other detainees were sentenced to death by Khalkhali, who labelled them as "corruptors on earth and warriors against God and the Prophet." Mr. Ziaei was executed by firing squad behind Paveh Hospital on the morning of 20 August 1979. His family, unaware of his situation following his arrest, was unexpectedly informed of his execution.
آقای ضیایی روز ٢٢ مرداد ١٣٥٨ هنگامی که سوار ماشین یکی از همکاران خود به بیمارستان پاوه، محل کارش، می رفت از جلوی واحد اطلاعات سپاه پاسداران رد شد؛ او توسط پاسداران بدون حکم بازداشت دستگیر شد. آقای ضیایی در واحد اطلاعات سپاه نگهداری می شد. در یک هفته بازداشت، او از داشتن وکیل و ملاقات با خانواده اش محروم بود (مصاحبه). از اظهارات محمد علی رازی زاده، حاکم شرع کرمانشاه، این طور به نظر می رسد که مسئولین خانواده ها را از تلاش برای دیدن زندانیان منع می کردند.
خلخالی آقای سیف الدین ضیایی و دیگر زندانیان را "مفسدین فی الارض و محارب با خدا و رسول خدا" شناخت و به مرگ محکوم کرد. آقای ضیایی بامداد ٢٩ مرداد ١٣٥٨ پشت بیمارستان پاوه، تیر باران شد . خانواده آقای ضیایی در اوج بیخبری از وضعیت وی پس از بازداشت، غافلگیرانه از اعدام وی مطلع شدند.
