Reports indicate that the individual was arrested in October or November 2016 during coordinated detentions of Baha'is in Shiraz by the Ministry of Intelligence. The person was held for a period at the Intelligence Office detention centre and then at Adelabad Prison. After approximately 39 days, they were released on bail along with other defendants.
In June 2022, the First Branch of the Revolutionary Court of Shiraz, presided over by Judge Mahmoud Sadati, sentenced Shamim Akhlaghi to two years of imprisonment, a two-year travel ban, two years of exile to Semirom, and daily reporting to the Intelligence Office. The charges included propaganda against the regime and membership in opposition groups. The individual's spouse was also convicted in the same case.
On 14 January 2023, the Fars Province Appeals Court acquitted all defendants in this case, including Shamim Akhlaghi. However, following a request for a retrial by the head of the Fars Judiciary and the subsequent referral of the case, these individuals have been summoned again. A new hearing is scheduled for 11 October 2026 at the First Branch of the Revolutionary Court of Shiraz.

در خرداد ۱۴۰۱، شعبه اول دادگاه انقلاب شیراز به ریاست قاضی محمود ساداتی، شمیم اخلاقی را به دو سال حبس تعزیری، دو سال منع خروج از کشور، دو سال تبعید به سمیرم و معرفی روزانه به اداره اطلاعات محکوم کرد. اتهامات مطرح شده شامل تبلیغ علیه نظام و عضویت در گروه های معاند بود. همسر او نیز در همین پرونده محکوم شد.
در ۲۴ دی ۱۴۰۱، شعبه تجدیدنظر استان فارس همه متهمان این پرونده، از جمله شمیم اخلاقی، را تبرئه کرد. با این حال، پس از درخواست اعاده دادرسی از سوی رئیس کل دادگستری فارس و ارجاع دوباره پرونده، این افراد بار دیگر احضار شده اند. جلسه رسیدگی جدید برای ۱۹ مهر ۱۴۰۵ در شعبه اول دادگاه انقلاب شیراز تعیین شده است.
