Mehran Samak, born in 1995, was an Iranian citizen residing in Bandar Anzali who was killed on the evening of November 29, 2022, while celebrating Iran's loss in the 2022 FIFA World Cup amidst a nationwide uprising. He was shot dead by forces affiliated with the Islamic Republic in Bandar Anzali. In his childhood, Samak had played with football player Saeed Ezatolahi.
On the evening of November 29, 2022, Mehran Samak was in his personal vehicle with his fiancée in the Chahargah neighborhood of Bandar Anzali when he became the target of gunfire from security agents on the night Iran was eliminated from the 2022 World Cup. He lost his life after being taken to the hospital. In his last Instagram story, Mehran Samak had urged people to stand together and focus solely on street protests and strikes.
His funeral was held on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, with the presence of a number of people at the "Martyrs' Cemetery" in Bandar Anzali. Attendees chanted slogans against the Islamic Republic, including "You are a pervert, you are a whore, I am a free woman," "This year is the year of blood, Seyed Ali will fall," and "We fight, we die, we take back Iran."
Media outlets close to the security forces, including the Tasnim News Agency, attempted to blame Mehran Samak's murder on government opponents, and the police chief of the city announced the "arrest of suspects." After the prosecutor of Rasht confirmed that Samak was killed by a shotgun pellet, Jafar Javanmardi, the police chief of Bandar Anzali, was arrested. He was charged with "failure to comply with the law on the use of firearms leading to intentional murder." Javanmardi was later dismissed from his position as police chief of Bandar Anzali, and since he was in military service at the time of the crime, the case was referred to a military court. According to the lawyer for Mehran Samak's family, the military court has issued a ruling of intentional murder against Javanmardi. With objections from the accused's lawyers to the ruling, the case has gone to the Supreme Court.
