Meysam and Mojtaba Veysi were well-regarded and popular figures, followers of the Yarsan faith, among the founders of the library in Dareh Derij township (Mahdieh town) of Kermanshah, and key organizers of Kurdish Nowruz celebrations in the area. In addition to his civic activities, Mojtaba Veysi was also a prominent athlete and an accomplished wrestler in Kermanshah Province.
The two brothers had previously been targeted multiple times due to their identity-based and religious activities. Mojtaba Veysi was violently arrested on March 5, 2025 (15 Esfand 1403), while preparing for Nowruz ceremonies in Shirin Park in Kermanshah. After enduring 18 days in solitary confinement and being transferred to Dizel-Abad Prison, he was temporarily released on March 29, 2025 (9 Farvardin 1404) on heavy bail of 700 million tomans.
Meysam Veysi also had a history of arrest and judicial prosecution during past protests in the Yarsan-inhabited neighborhood of Dareh Derij. Due to their continued activities, the two brothers had been under intense surveillance by security authorities since the nationwide protests of last December and, facing threats to their lives, had been forced into hiding.
The physical elimination and direct targeting of the hideout of civil activists is a recurring pattern, aligned with the Islamic Republic of Iran’s policy of field-based and systematic assassinations aimed at suppressing dissenters and ethnic activists in Kurdistan.
