Mehdi Dibaj was born on 5 August 1934 in Isfahan. During his teenage years, he converted to Christianity and moved to Tehran.
Dibaj travelled to India and Switzerland for further studies and, upon returning to Iran, taught English at the Faculty of Engineering in Babol for a period. He later resigned from this position to focus on translating and authoring religious texts. In early 1986, he was arrested on charges of apostasy and imprisoned. After spending 9 years and 27 days in prison, he was released on 16 January 1994 due to international pressure.
Five months after his release, on 4 July 1994, he was abducted, and a few days later, reports emerged of his lifeless body being found. It was reported that the location of his body was indicated on a piece of paper placed on the corpse of Tatavous Michaelian. Four years later, it was announced that Mehdi Dibaj had been killed by agents of the Ministry of Intelligence.
مهدی دیباج در ۱۴مرداد ۱۳۱۳ در اصفهان به دنیا آمد. او در نوجوانی به مسیحیت گروید و به تهران رفت.
دیباج برای ادامه تحصیلات به هندوستان و سوئیس سفر کرد و پس از بازگشت به ایران، مدتی در دانشکده فنی بابل به تدریس زبان انگلیسی پرداخت. او سپس از این کار استعفا داد تا به ترجمه و تألیف متون مذهبی بپردازد. در اوایل سال ۱۳۶۵، به اتهام ارتداد دستگیر و به زندان فرستاده شد. پس از گذراندن 9 سال و ۲۷ روز در زندان، در ۲۶ دی ۱۳۷۲ به دلیل فشارهای بین المللی آزاد شد.
پنج ماه پس از آزادی، در ۱۳تیر ۱۳۷۳ ربوده شد و چند روز بعد، خبر پیدا شدن جسد بی جان او منتشر شد. گفته شده بود که نشانی جسد او بر روی تکه کاغذی روی جنازه طاطاوس میکائیلیان قرار داده شده بود. چهار سال بعد، اعلام شد که مهدی دیباج توسط مأمورین وزارت اطلاعات کشته شده است.
