Haik Hovsepian Mehr, an Armenian-Iranian pastor and human rights activist, was killed on 20 January 1994. Until his death, he served as the bishop of the Jama'at-e Rabbani Church and was actively involved in defending the rights of religious minorities and advocating for the release of political and ideological prisoners.
Three days after his successful efforts to secure the release of Mehdi Dibaj, he was abducted while on his way to Mehrabad Airport. A few days later, police reported the discovery of his body. Four years later, it was revealed that he had been killed by agents of the Ministry of Intelligence.
Various reports indicate that Hovsepian Mehr had sensed threats prior to his death. A United Nations report stated that he had travelled to Iran to defend the rights of Christians and was abducted and killed shortly thereafter. Amnesty International reported that the murder of Christian pastors was due to their opposition to the Islamic Republic of Iran.
In 2017, Bishop Haik Hovsepian's grave received attention. A report from a US Congress representative noted that Hovsepian Mehr had predicted he would be killed because of his activities. His body was found on 20 January 1994, and it was reported that he had been tortured before his death.
هایک هوسپیان مهر، کشیش و فعال حقوق بشر ارمنی تبار اهل ایران، در 20 ژانویه 1994 کشته شد. او تا زمان مرگش اسقف کلیسای جماعت ربانی بود و برای دفاع از حقوق اقلیت های دینی و نجات زندانیان سیاسی و عقیدتی تلاش می کرد.
سه روز پس از تلاش های موفقیت آمیزش برای آزادی مهدی دیباج، در حالی که به فرودگاه مهرآباد می رفت، ربوده شد. چند روز بعد، پلیس از پیدا شدن جسد او خبر داد. چهار سال بعد مشخص شد که او توسط مأمورین وزارت اطلاعات کشته شده است.
گزارش های مختلف نشان می دهند که هوسپیان مهر قبل از کشته شدنش تهدیدهایی را احساس می کرده است. در گزارشی از سازمان ملل متحد آمده است که او برای دفاع از حقوق مسیحیان به ایران رفته بود و پس از چند روز ربوده و به قتل رسید. همچنین گزارش سازمان عفو بین الملل حاکی از این است که قتل کشیشان مسیحی به دلیل مخالفت آن ها با جمهوری اسلامی ایران بوده است.
آرامگاه اسقف هایک هوسپیان در سال 2017 مورد توجه قرار گرفت. در گزارشی از یک نماینده کنگره آمریکا نیز اشاره شده که هوسپیان مهر قبل از مرگش پیش بینی کرده بود که به دلیل فعالیت هایش کشته خواهد شد. جسد او در 20 ژانویه 1994 پیدا شد و قبل از مرگش شکنجه شده بود.
