Mehdi Vafaei Sani, born in 1984 and residing in Tehran, was arrested on 8 June 2022 and transferred to Evin Prison. He was sentenced to six years in prison on charges of propaganda against the system and society, as well as conspiracy due to connections with the People's Mojahedin Organization.
A report from the Iran Human Rights Centre on 25 April 2024 indicated that he might have developed gastrointestinal cancer and required urgent medical attention. He was also reported to be suffering from severe back pain.
On Tuesday, 30 September 2025, Mehdi Vafaei Sani was unexpectedly removed from Ward Seven of Evin Prison and transferred to the detention centre of the Qom Intelligence Department. An additional charge of carrying weapons was added to his case. However, the Ministry of Intelligence was unsuccessful in building a case against him, and a non-prosecution order was issued by the District 33 Prosecutor's Office in Tehran.
On 12 April 2026, Mehdi Vafaei Sani was suddenly transferred from Ward Seven of Evin Prison to solitary confinement in Ghezel Hesar without prior notice, medication, or personal belongings. This action was reportedly due to his involvement in holding a memorial ceremony for six executed political prisoners and distributing food among inmates.
مهدی وفایی ثانی، متولد ۱۳۶۳ و ساکن تهران، در تاریخ ۱۸ خرداد ۱۴۰۱دستگیر و به زندان اوین منتقل شد. وی به اتهام تبلیغ علیه نظام و جامعه و همچنین تبانی به دلیل ارتباط با سازمان مجاهدین خلق به ۶ سال حبس محکوم شد.
در گزارشی از کانون بشر ایران در ۵ اردیبهشت ۱۴۰۳ حاکی از احتمال ابتلا به بیماری سرطان دستگاه گوارشی است و نیاز به رسیدگی فوری پزشکی داشته و همچنین از درد شدید کمر رنج می برده است.
مهدی وفایی ثانی، روز سه شنبه ۸ مهرماه ۱۴۰۴، بدون اطلاع قبلی از بند هفت زندان اوین خارج شد و به بازداشتگاه اداره اطلاعات قم منتقل گردید و جرم حمل اسلحه به پرونده او اضافه گردید ولی وزارت اطلاعات در پرونده سازی علیه او ناکام ماند و حکم منع تعقیب از سوی دادسرای ناحیه ۳۳ تهران برای وی صادر شد.
مهدی وفایی ثانی ۲۳ فروردین ۱۴۰۵ از بند ۷ اوین با ضرب وشتم به صورت ناگهانی به انفرادی قزلحصار منتقل شد؛ بدون اطلاع قبلی و حتی بدون دارو و وسایل شخصی. دلیل این اقدام: برگزاری مراسم یادبود ۶ زندانی سیاسی اعدام شده و توزیع خوراکی میان زندانیان.
