On July 12, 2025, the request for a retrial of Mehrdad Bakhtiari, a political prisoner, was recently approved by the judges of Branch 39 of the Supreme Court.
A lawyer announced this news on his personal page, explaining that the retrial request for Mehrdad Bakhtiari was accepted by Branch 39 of the Supreme Court, and the case was referred to a parallel branch. The Supreme Court's ruling was notable for its precise reasoning in dismissing the charge of "assembly and collusion."
Mehrdad Bakhtiari was arrested on August 8, 2024, by security agents with a judicial arrest warrant issued by the Prosecutor's Office of Karaj, and he was transferred to Karaj Central Prison. His request for a retrial of his prison sentence had been previously rejected.
His arrest followed the release of a video on August 7, 2024, in which he reported the beating of his brother in the Revolutionary Court. He explained that his brother had visited the court to follow up on their family case and was assaulted.
Mehrdad Bakhtiari was tried on February 17, 2024, by Judge Mousa Asif Al-Hosseini, the head of the First Branch of the Revolutionary Court of Karaj, and on March 3, 2024, he was sentenced to five years in prison for "assembly and collusion to disrupt national security," one year in prison for "propaganda against the regime," two years of exile to Shahr-e Kord, and a two-year travel ban.
On July 11, 2022, amid the widespread arrest of several mothers and family members of those killed in the November 2019 protests, Mehrdad Bakhtiari was arrested by security forces and transferred to the detention center of the Alborz Province Intelligence Department. After undergoing interrogation and investigation, he was moved to the quarantine ward of Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj and was released on bail of 2.4 billion tomans on September 3, 2022.
Previously, in November 2020, during the anniversary ceremony of his nephew Pouya Bakhtiari, he was arrested by security forces. After being transferred to a detention center of one of the security agencies in Karaj and undergoing interrogation and indictment, he was sentenced by the Revolutionary Court to a five-year suspended prison sentence and a two-year travel ban. He was released on December 17, 2020.
Manouchehr Bakhtiari, Mehrdad Bakhtiari's brother, is currently serving his prison sentence related to a case he pursued to find the murderer of his son, Pouya Bakhtiari, who was killed during the nationwide protests of November 2019. He is serving his sentence in Chubin Dar Central Prison in Qazvin.
Pouya Bakhtiari, Mehrdad Bakhtiari's nephew, was killed during the nationwide protests of November 2019 after being shot by security forces. Despite the severity of his injuries, no proper response has been given to the Bakhtiari family regarding the punishment of the perpetrator or perpetrators responsible for his death.

به گزارش حقوق بشر در ایران، به تاریخ شنبه۲۱ تیر ماه ۱۴۰۴،طی روزهای اخیر، درخواست اعاده دادرسی به حکم حبس تعزیری مهرداد بختیاری، زندانی سیاسی، توسط قضات شعبه ۳۹دیوان عالی کشور تائید شد.
علی شریف زاده اردکانی، وکیل دادگستری با اعلام این خبر در صفحه شخصی خود تشریح کرد:”اعاده دادرسی مهردادبختیاری در شعبه ۳۹ دیوان عالی کشور پذیرفته شد و پرونده به شعبه هم عرض ارجاع شد. نکته برجسته در رأی دیوان عالی، استدلال دقیق آن در عدم تحقق اتهام «اجتماع و تبانی» است.”
لازم به اشاره است، مهرداد بختیاری، در تاریخ ۱۷ مرداد ماه ۱۴۰۳، توسط ماموران امنیتی، با حکم جلب قضایی صادره از سوی دادستان عمومی و انقلاب شهر کرج، دستگیر و به زندان مرکزی کرج منتقل در خواست اعاده دادرسی به حکم حبس تعزیری وی رد شده بود.
بازداشت مهرداد بختیاری، پس از آن صورت گرفته که وی در تاریخ ۱۶ مرداد ماه ۱۴۰۳، با انتشار کلیپی از ضرب و شتم برادرش در دادگاه انقلاب، خبر داده بود و تشریح کرد که برادرش برای پیگیری پرونده خانوادگی شان به آن واحد قضایی مراجعه و ضرب و شتم شده بود.
مهرداد بختیاری، در تاریخ ۲۸ بهمن ماه ۱۴۰۲، توسط قاضی موسی آصف الحسینی ـ رئیس شعبه اول دادگاه انقلاب کرج، محاکمه و در تاریخ ۱۳ اسفند ماه ۱۴۰۲، از بابت اتهام «اجتماع و تبانی به قصد برهم زدن امنیت کشور» به تحمل ۵ سال حبس تعزیری، به اتهام «فعالیت تبلیغی علیه نظام» هم به تحمل ۱ سال حبس تعزیری، دو سال تبعید به شهرکرد و همچنین به ۲ سال منع خروج از کشور، محکوم شده بود.
همچنین، در تاریخ ۲۰ تیرماه ۱۴۰۱، همزمان با بازداشت گسترده تنی چند از مادران و اعضای خانواده های جانباختگان اعتراضات آبان ۱۳۹۸، مهردا بختیاری، توسط نیروهای امنیتی بازداشت و به بازداشتگاه اداره اطلاعات استان البرز منتقل و پس از طی مراحل بازجوئی و بازپرسی به بند قرنطینه زندان رجائی شهر کرج منتقل و در تاریخ ۱۲ شهریور ماه ۱۴۰۱، با تودیع وثیقه ای به مبلغ ۲ میلیارد و ۴۰۰ میلیون تومان آزاد شد.
وی پیشتر هم در آبان ماه سال ۱۳۹۹، همزمان با برگزاری مراسم سالگرد برادر زاده اش پویا بختیاری، توسط نیروهای امنیتی، بازداشت و پس از انتقال به بازداشتگاه یکی از نهادهای امنیتی در شهر کرج وطی مراحل بازجویی ها و تفهیم اتهام توسط قاضی دادگاه انقلاب به تحمل ۵ سال حبس تعلیقی و ۲سال منع خروج از کشور محکوم و در تاریخ ۲۷ آذر ماه ۱۳۹۹، آزاد شد.
منوچهر بختیاری، برادر مهرداد بختیاری هم در حال حاض دوران حبس تعزیری خود را از بابت پرونده ای که به سبب دادخواهی برای پیدا کردن قاتل فرزندش ـ پویا بختیاری از جان باختگان اعتراضات سراسری آبان ۱۳۹، انجام داده بود در زندان مرکزی چوبیندر قزوین، سپری می کند.
همچنین، پویا بختیاری، برادرزاده مهرداد بختیاری، در جریان اعتراضات سراسری آبان ۱۳۰۸، بر اثر اصابت گلوله شلیک شده توسط ماموران امنیتی و شدت جراحات وارده جان باخت و تا به امروز هیچگونه پاسخ درستی به خانواده بختیاری برای مجازات قاتل یا قاتلین این شهروند صورت نگرفته است.
