On Thursday, January 31, 2025, Abdolreza Valizadeh was sentenced to imprisonment and other punitive measures.
In recent days, Abdolreza Valizadeh, a journalist, media activist, and dual Iranian-American citizen imprisoned in Evin Prison, was sentenced by the judge of the Tehran Court of Appeals to 10 years of imprisonment, a ban on residing in Tehran and neighboring provinces, and a ban on membership in political, social, and cultural parties, groups, and organizations.
Mohammad Hossein Aghasi, the defense lawyer for this political prisoner, explained in a post on his personal page that he visited Abdolreza Valizadeh to see the rejection of the appeal request. It was previously mentioned that the court process confirmed the initial verdict, but perhaps a retrial could open the eyes of blind justice. Ten years in prison cannot be the punishment for working in media, even if considered "hostile," because the charge of "propaganda against the regime" carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison.
The hearing on the charges against Abdolreza Valizadeh was held on November 21, 2024, in Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court. This dual citizen presented his defense against the charges of "propaganda against the regime," "collaboration with hostile governments with the intent to disrupt national security," and "assembly and collusion" to Judge Iman Afshari, head of Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court. He was subsequently sentenced to a total of 10 years of imprisonment, a ban on residing in Tehran and neighboring provinces, and a ban on membership in political, social, and cultural parties, groups, and organizations.
On October 17, 2024, a report was published detailing Abdolreza Valizadeh’s deprivation as an accused individual and the continuation of his detention and uncertainty in Evin Prison.
On August 13, 2024, in his last virtual post, Abdolreza Valizadeh announced that he entered Tehran on March 6, 2024. Prior to that, he had incomplete negotiations with the Intelligence Organization of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Ultimately, he returned to his country after 14 years, on his own responsibility and without even a verbal safe conduct.
According to a post on Abdolreza Valizadeh's account on platform X, it was stated that the journalist returned to Iran and the city of Tehran on March 6, 2024.
In 2007, Abdolreza Valizadeh was arrested for the first time by security forces and was released on bail after undergoing interrogation and charges.
This journalist and media activist has a history of working with Radio Farda, Voice of America, and the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting News Agency.
