Nasrin Sotoudeh, a lawyer and human rights activist, was arrested at her home by Ministry of Intelligence agents on 13 June 2018 due to her peaceful humanitarian activities. She was transferred to the women's ward of Evin Prison. After undergoing interrogation, she was charged with several offences, including assembly and collusion, propaganda against the system, effective membership in illegal and anti-security groups such as the Defenders of Human Rights Center, LEGAM, and the National Peace Council, encouraging corruption and prostitution, appearing without a hijab at the prosecutor's office, disturbing public order, and spreading falsehoods to disturb public opinion. Her case was referred to Branch 28 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court.
On 14 March 2019, Nasrin Sotoudeh was sentenced to a total of 33 years of imprisonment on seven charges. According to the verdict delivered to her in prison, after applying Article 134, which aggregates sentences, the maximum punishment of 10 years was enforced. However, for individuals facing more than three charges, the sentence can increase up to one and a half times, resulting in a 12-year sentence for Sotoudeh.
Sotoudeh was sentenced in absentia to 38 years of imprisonment and 148 lashes. On 22 June 2021, she was granted a furlough connected to her release, which was subsequently extended.
According to information provided by her spouse, Nasrin Sotoudeh was arrested on 29 October 2023, during the funeral of Armita Geravand, and was taken to a police centre in the Shah Abdol-Azim neighbourhood of Tehran. On 30 October 2023, after being charged, she was transferred to Qarchak Varamin Prison under a temporary detention order.
On Wednesday, 15 November 2023, after completing interrogations and being charged, she was released on bail of 600 million tomans pending the completion of legal proceedings.
While on medical leave since 15 November 2023, she was arrested at her home on 31 March 2026, and all her electronic devices were confiscated.
Nasrin Sotoudeh was released on bail from Greater Tehran Prison on 13 May 2026.
نسرین ستوده وکیل دادگستری و فعال حقوق بشر، به دلیل فعالیتهای مسالمت آمیز انسان دوستانه اش در تاریخ ۲۳ خرداد ۱۳۹۷ در منزل شخصی خود توسط ماموران وزارت اطلاعات بازداشت و به بند زنان زندان اوین منتقل و پس از طی مراحل بازجوئی ها از بابت اتهامات (اجتماع و تبانی)، (فعالیت تبلیغی علیه نظام)، (عضویت موثر در گروهک غیرقانونی و ضد امنیتی کانون مدافعان حقوق بشر، لگام و شورای ملی صلح)، (تشویق مردم به فساد و فحشاء و فراهم آوردن موجبات آن)، (ظاهر شدن بدون حجاب شرعی در محل شعبه بازپرسی)، (اخلال در نظم و آسایش عمومی)، (نشر اکاذیب به قصد تشویش اذهان عمومی)، توسط شعبه ۲ بازپرسی زندان اوین مورد تفهیم قرار گرفت و پرونده وی به شعبه ۲۸ دادگاه انقلاب تهران به ریاست قاضی وقت – محمد مقیسه ارسال شده بود.
در تاریخ ۲۳ اسفند ماه ۱۳۹۷، نسرین ستوده با ۷ اتهام، در مجموع به تحمل ۳۳ سال حبس تعزیری محکوم شد. با توجه به ابلاغیه حکمی که در زندان به این وکیل دادگستری و فعال حقوق بشر ابلاغ شده بود پس از اعمال ماده ۱۳۴،(تجمیع جرائم)، اشد مجازات، یعنی ۱۰ سال حبس تعزیری برای این وکیل دادگستری اجرائی شد اما افرادی که با بیش از ۳ اتهام مواجه باشند، حکم آنها می تواند تا یک و نیم برابر افزایش یابد که تحمل ۱۲ سال حبس تعزیری برای نسرین ستوده لازم به اجرا شده بود.
در حالی نسرین ستوده به ۳۸ سال حبس تعزیری و ۱۴۸ضربه شلاق محکوم سده بود که این این حکم بصورت غیابی بر علیه وی صادر شده بود.
این وکیل دادگستری، در تاریخ ۱ تیر ماه ۱۴۰۰، به مرخصی متصل به آزادی اعزام و مرخصی وی تمدید شده بود.
بنا بر اطلاع رسانی همسر این وکیل حقوق بشر: «نسرین ستوده، ۷ آبان ۱۴۰۲، در مراسم خاک سپاری آرمیتا گراوند، با ضرب و جرح بازداشت شد و به مرکز انتظامی در محله شاه عبدالعظیم تهران منتقل شده است.» ۸ آبان ماه ۱۴۰۲، نسرین ستوده، پس از تفهیم اتهام با صدور قرار بازداشت موقت، به زندان قرچک ورامین منتقل شد.
چهارشنبه ۲۴ آبان ماه ۱۴۰۲، پس از اتمام بازجویی ها و تفهیم اتهام با تودیع قرار وثیقه ای به مبلغ ۶۰۰ میلیون تومان تا اتمام مراحل دادرسی آزاد شد.
وی که از ۲۴ آبان ۱۴۰۲ در مرخصی درمانی به سر می برد، در تاریخ ۱۲ فروردین ۱۴۰۵ در منزل خود بازداشت شد و تمامی وسایل الکترونیکی وی ضبط شده است.
نسرین ستوده، ۲۳ اردیبهشت ماه ۱۴۰۵ با قرار کفالت از زندان تهران بزرگ آزاد شد.
