Mohammad Mokhtari was shot and killed by security forces from the Basij, who were on motorcycles, during street protests on February 14, 2011, near the intersection of Toosi and Towhid streets in Tehran.

Mohammad Mokhtari, a mining engineering student at Islamic Azad University of Shahroud, was one of two individuals who were fatally shot during street protests on 14 February 2011 near the intersection of Toosi and Tohid streets in Tehran. He was reportedly injured by a direct gunshot from law enforcement officers on motorcycles on Rudaki Street, approximately fifty metres from Tohid Street. The bullet struck his forehead and remained lodged in his head.

Mokhtari had participated in the 2009 elections and was a supporter of the Green Movement, protesting the election results. He used his Facebook page to share calls for the protest on 14 February 2011 and consistently wore a green protest wristband. In his final Facebook post, he expressed a desire for a dignified death.

Fars News Agency attributed the killing to the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran, distancing the responsibility from Iranian security forces.

محمد مختاری دانشجوی مهندسی معدن دانشگاه آزاد شاهرود یکی از دو نفری است که در جریان اعتراضات خیابانی بیست و پنجم بهمن ماه سال ۱۳۸۹ در نزدیکی تقاطع خیابان طوسی و توحید در تهران توسط افراد نیروهای امنیتی بسیج سوار بر موتورسیکلت به ضرب گلوله کشته شد.
وی در خیابان رودکی (پنجاه متر مانده به خیابان توحید) و به گفته ها شاهدان به ضرب گلولهٔ مستقیم مأموران موتور سوار نیروی انتظامی و به وسیلهٔ کلت کمری مجروح شد. تیر به پیشانی محمد خورده و بیرون نیامده بود، یعنی توی سرش گیر کرده بود.

او همچنین در انتخابات سال ۱۳۸۸ شرکت کرده بود، از هواداران جنبش سبز و معترضان به نتایج آن انتخابات به شمار می رفت. در صفحه فیسبوک خود فراخوان های مربوط به تجمع اعتراضی ۲۵ بهمن ۱۳۸۹ را منتشر می کرد و همیشه مچ بند سبز رنگ اعتراضی به دست داشت.
او در آخرین پستی که در صفحه فیسبوکش منتشر کرد نوشت: «خدایا ایستاده مردن را نصیبم کن که از نشسته زیستن در ذلت خسته ام.»

خبرگزاری فارس برای سلب مسئولیت از نیروهای امنیتی رژیم ایران این قتل را به مجاهدین خلق نسبت داده بود.
