Ali Younesi is a computer engineering student at Sharif University. He was arrested along with Amirhossein Moradi, his friend and fellow university student, on 10th April 2020 and was accused of "corruption on earth". Finally, the court rejected this charge and sentenced each of them to 16 years in prison on other charges; This verdict was against the opinion of the court and was issued at the insistence of the Ministry of Information. He is the silver medallist of the National Astronomy Olympiad of 2016, the gold medallist of the National Astronomy Olympiad of 2017, a member of the 12th Iran World Astronomy Olympiad team, and also the winner of the gold medal of the World Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad of 2017 in the 12th World Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad.
The Court of Appeal announced the charge that led to his conviction propaganda against the regime , assembly and collusion to act against national security and arson or destruction of public property and sentenced him to ten years in prison.
Amirhossein Moradi and Ali Younesi, on the occasion of the third anniversary of their arrest, by releasing an audio file from the prison on the 22nd of April 1402, while narrating part of the sufferings they have endured during the past three years, referring to the lives of those who rose up, life, and freedom. They said: "Like all the young people who were killed in the streets, we have no desire but the freedom of Iran."In a part of this audio file, the two imprisoned students say: "On April 10, 2020, we were arrested with severe beatings and transferred to Ward 209. In total, we spent more than two years in solitary cells and closed cells, and in the third year, we were transferred to the general ward of Evin prison." In the continuation of this audio file, they added: "In the midst of torture and pressure and threats of execution, we saw ourselves as a drop of the roaring river that is trying to break the barrier called dictatorship that is on the way of Iran's history and to reach the beautiful plain of Azadi."
On June 6, 2023, these two prisoners were forbidden to meet.
According to Human Rights in Iran, on Monday, March 10, 2025, in recent days, Ali Younesi's sentence was reduced to 6 years and 8 months of penal servitude after his request for a retrial was approved by the same branch of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran.
علی یونسی دانشجوی مهندسی کامپیوتر در دانشگاه شریف است. او به همراه امیرحسین مرادی، دوست و هم دانشگاهی خود، در ۲۲ فروردین ۱۳۹۹ بازداشت و به "افساد فی الارض" متهم شد. نهایتا دادگاه این اتهام را رد کرد و هر یک را به اتهامات دیگری به ۱۶ سال حبس محکوم کرد؛ این حکم خلاف نظر دادگاه بوده و با پافشاری وزارت اطلاعات صادر شده است.
دادگاه تجدید نظر اتهام منجر به محکومیت او را تبلیغ علیه نظام، اجتماع و تبانی برای اقدام علیه امنیت ملی و احراق یا تخریب اموال عمومی اعلام و او را به ده سال حبس محکوم کرد.
در این دو دانشجوی زندانی در بخشی از این فایل صوتی می گویند: "۲۲ فروردین ۹۹ همراه با ضرب وشتم شدید دستگیر و به بند ۲۰۹ منتقل شدیم. جمعا بیش از دو سال را در سلول های انفرادی و سلول های در بسته سر کردیم و در سومین سال به بند عمومی زندان اوین منتقل شدیم."
در تاریخ شانزده خرداد ۱۴۰۲ این دو زندانی ممنوع الملاقات شدند.
به گزارش حقوق بشر در ایران روز دوشنبه ۲۰ اسفند ماه ۱۴۰۳، طی روزهای اخیر، مدت حبس علی یونسی، پس از تائید درخواست اعاده دادرسی و محاکمه مجدد در شعبه هم عرض در دادگاه انقلاب تهران، ۶ سال و ۸ ماه حبس تعزیری تقلیل یافت.
در ۸ مرداد ۱۴۰۴، اعلام شد که پس از سه ماه بی خبری از وضعیت او، به زندان قم منتقل شده است. در ۲۳ مرداد ۱۴۰۴، او از زندان قم به زندان قزل حصار در کرج منتقل شد.
در ۱۹ مرداد ۱۴۰۴، شعبه ۲۹ دادگاه انقلاب تهران علی یونسی را به مجموعاً ۶ سال و ۳ ماه حبس، همراه با محرومیت های اجتماعی و تبعید محکوم کرد.
در تابستان ۱۴۰۴، علی یونسی توسط شعبه ۲۹ دادگاه انقلاب تهران در پرونده ای جدید به ۱۵ ماه حبس به اتهام "تبلیغ علیه نظام" محکوم شد. این حکم در ۵ مهر ۱۴۰۵ توسط دادگاه تجدید نظر تایید شد و با تشکیل پرونده جدید توسط وزارت اطلاعات و تایید احکام صادره، حبس او ادامه خواهد یافت.
او برنده مدال نقره المپیاد کشوری نجوم سال ۱۳۹۵، مدال طلای المپیاد کشوری نجوم سال ۱۳۹۶، عضو دوازدهمین تیم المپیاد جهانی نجوم ایران و همچنین برنده مدال طلای المپیاد جهانی نجوم و اخترفیزیک سال ۱۳۹۶ در دوازدهمین المپیاد جهانی نجوم و اخترفیزیک است.
